TASTING NOTES

Chenin meets Chardonnay! ‘‘It has beautiful aromatics of ripe apple, pastry, lemons, and baked bread...lovely crystalline citrus fruit with apple and pear notes, along with subtle hints of honey and wax. Quite generous, but with enough acidity to keep it balanced. Beautifully layered and complex, with a slight salinity on the finish. 95/100’’ – Jamie Goode, WineAnorak, 2023

Furmint grown exclusively on the steep terraces of Gorca. The south-facing basins retain heat in summer, which benefits the development of the variety. Aged for 12 months in large barrels, followed by 6 months in stainless steel after malolactic fermentation is complete.

Vino Gross is in Haloze, a sub-region within Slovenian Styria. Michael’s father, an established winemaker in Austria, recognized the potential of these vineyards, which were so close to home, and purchased them about 20 years ago. In 2011, Michael decided to farm these vineyards to branch out from the family winery in Austria and, together with his wife Maria, launched what is now Vino Gross. The sites are steep, with inclines of up to 65% in some cases, and the vines range from 15 to 70 years old across their plantings. The soil in the Haloze wine region consists mainly of limy clay marl, known locally as Opok.

In the cellar, the wines are fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and aged in large barrels and stainless steel tanks. There is no fining or filtering, and in most vintages, no sulfur is added. The wines have a very low pH, resulting in great stability and longevity. However, as Michael puts it, ‘We’re not dogmatic; we know that there will be vintages where it might be necessary to add sulphites.
